Margaret Island is already one of the most relaxing places in Budapest, but there is one spot that completely changes its atmosphere: the Musical Fountain. During the day it is a nice place to stop after walking around the island, but in the evening it becomes much more special.
The fountain is the largest musical fountain in Hungary. It is about 36 metres wide, and its central water jet can reach more than 25 metres high. Every hour, the water moves following different songs, creating shapes and rhythms that make it look almost like the fountain is dancing.

When water starts dancing
What makes this fountain different from a normal one is the combination of music and movement. Some jets slowly rise with quieter parts of the songs, while others suddenly shoot into the air when the music becomes stronger.
Sitting around the fountain and watching the water follow the rhythm is surprisingly relaxing. You do not really need to do anything: just find a place to sit and enjoy the show.

The best moment: after sunset
The fountain becomes much more impressive when it gets dark. Lights illuminate the water with different colours, while the surrounding trees remain almost completely dark.
In the evening, special projections can also be displayed on the curtain of water, turning the fountain into a small open-air multimedia show.
This is probably the moment when you can understand its real charm. The reflections, music and colours create a completely different atmosphere from the busy streets in the centre of Budapest.

A simple experience that is worth stopping for
The Musical Fountain is not the kind of attraction where you need to spend hours. It is more about the atmosphere.
After walking around Margaret Island, cycling, having a picnic or simply relaxing on the grass, stopping here in the evening is a perfect way to finish the visit. Margaret Island itself is one of Budapest’s main green areas, with gardens, ruins and paths surrounded by old trees, so the fountain feels like the final surprise at the end of a quiet day in nature.

Why we liked it
Maybe the nicest thing about the Musical Fountain is that it is very simple. There is no complicated attraction or spectacular building to visit. There are just water, music, lights and people sitting together around the fountain.
But when you see it at night, especially after spending the day walking around Budapest, it has something special. It is one of those small experiences that you probably do not expect much from, but that can become one of the most relaxing memories of Margaret Island.
