If you are in Budapest for Erasmus, going out at night is definitely something you should try. The city has many different clubs, bars and party places, and there are options for every budget. Some places are free, while others have an entrance fee depending on the night or event.
Here are some of the places we liked the most.
Instant-Fogas
Instant-Fogas is probably one of the most famous places for Erasmus students in Budapest. It is a huge party complex with different rooms, music styles and dance floors.
One of the best things is that entry is usually free, although some special events can be paid.
We liked it because there are so many rooms that you can walk around and find different music without having to leave the club.
Ötkert
Ötkert is located close to St. Stephen’s Basilica and has a more classic nightclub atmosphere. It is a good choice if you want to dress up a little and spend the night dancing.
Entry can be free on some nights, but other events are paid. It is therefore better to check the event before going.
The club usually gets busier later in the evening, so we would not go too early.
Doboz
Doboz is another popular place in the Jewish Quarter. It is a mix between a ruin bar and a nightclub, with indoor areas and a courtyard.
One of the most recognizable things is the huge King Kong statue in the courtyard. At night, with all the lights, the atmosphere is really nice.
The entrance depends on the event, so it can be free on some nights and paid on others.
Akvárium Klub
Akvárium Klub is right in the centre of Budapest, in Erzsébet tér. It hosts concerts, DJ nights and parties, and there is also a terrace that is especially nice during the warmer months.
Some events are free, while others require a ticket.
We liked this place because it is very easy to reach and you can also meet friends there just for a drink before going somewhere else.
A38
A38 is probably the most unusual place on this list because it is a boat on the Danube.
It hosts concerts, DJ sets and parties, so it is a nice option if you want to try something different from a normal club.
Most events are paid, but there are also some free events depending on the programme.
Which ones are free?
If you are an Erasmus student and want to save some money, Instant-Fogas is usually the easiest option for free entry.
Ötkert, Doboz and Akvárium can be free depending on the event, while A38 is generally paid.
Before going out, we recommend checking the event online because entrance prices can change from one night to another.
Our Erasmus tip
Budapest nightlife usually starts quite late. We normally meet around 9 or 10 PM, have a drink somewhere and then go to a club later.
The best thing is that many nightlife places are close to each other, especially in the Jewish Quarter, so you can easily change plans during the night.
Just remember to bring your ID, wear comfortable shoes and maybe don’t book an 8 AM lecture for the morning after.
