When we arrived in Budapest for our Erasmus experience, we were excited but also a little nervous. We knew that spending one month in another country would be different, but we didn’t expect to learn so much from this experience.

Now that our month here is almost finished, we can say that Budapest has left us with many memories, new friendships and a different way of looking at things.

The things that surprised us

One of the things that surprised us the most is how international Budapest is. During our stay, we met people from many different countries and had the opportunity to communicate in English every day.

At first, speaking English all the time was a little difficult, but after a few weeks we became much more confident. We understood that you don’t have to speak perfectly to communicate with someone.

We were also surprised by how beautiful Budapest is. The Danube, the bridges and the historic buildings make the city very special, especially in the evening. We enjoyed walking around the city and discovering new places with our friends.

Living away from home

Being 18 and living abroad for a month also taught us to be more independent.

At home, we are used to having our families close to us. Here, we had to organise our days, manage our money, use public transport and solve problems by ourselves.

Sometimes it was difficult, but every small problem we solved made us feel more confident. We realised that we are more independent than we thought.

The people and the memories

The people we met are probably one of the most important parts of this experience. In just one month, we made new friends and shared many moments together.

Some of these people live in different countries, so we don’t know when we will see them again. But we are sure that we will remember the time we spent together in Budapest.

We will also miss the simple things: walking around the city, going out in the evening, laughing with our friends and discovering something new every day.

What Budapest leaves us with

Of course, we miss Italy, our families, our friends and our everyday life at home. But after one month in Budapest, we know that we will miss this place too.

Budapest was not just a place where we spent one month. It became a small part of our lives that we will take with us when we go back to Italy.

Erasmus taught us that leaving home can be difficult, but it can also help you grow. We came here as two 18-year-olds who wanted to have a new experience, and we are going home with more confidence, new friendships and many memories.
