Not far from Budapest, Szentendre is a perfect place to spend a slower and more relaxing day. After the traffic, trams and busy streets of the capital, arriving here feels completely different. The town is smaller, quieter and full of colours, little streets and places where you can simply walk without having a real plan.
Getting there from Budapest is also quite easy: the H5 suburban railway connects Batthyány tér with Szentendre, so it works very well as a day trip from the city.

Walking through the colourful streets
The first thing we noticed was the atmosphere of the centre. The streets are narrow, the houses have different colours and almost every corner looks a little different from the previous one.
It is one of those places where walking around is probably the best thing to do. There is no need to rush from one attraction to another. Small squares, cafés, shops and old buildings make the centre interesting by itself.
Szentendre can still have many tourists, especially in the central streets, but it does not feel as stressful as Budapest. Everything seems to move a little more slowly.

Small markets and local shops
While walking around the town, you can also find small stalls selling souvenirs, handmade objects, food and typical products.
Of course, some places are clearly made for tourists, but looking around is still part of the experience. The stalls, little shops and objects displayed outside also make the streets more colourful and lively.
You can stop, look at something interesting and then continue walking without really knowing where you are going. That is probably the best way to discover Szentendre.

A necessary gelato break
After walking for a while, a gelato is almost compulsory.
There are several cafés and ice cream shops around the centre, and sitting outside for a few minutes fits perfectly with the relaxed atmosphere of the town.
It is not a big attraction or something you need to plan in advance, but these simple moments are probably what make a day in Szentendre enjoyable.

Walking along the Danube
One of our favourite parts was the riverside.
Leaving the small streets of the centre and reaching the Danube suddenly gives the town an even calmer feeling. You can walk next to the water, sit down for a while or simply watch boats and people passing by.
The riverfront is especially nice when the weather is good. There is more space, fewer buildings around you and the atmosphere becomes very peaceful.

Szentendre’s little “beach”
One of the most unexpected places was the small area along the Danube that almost looks like a beach.
It is obviously very different from a real seaside beach, but you can get close to the water, sit on the stones and relax while looking at the river. When the weather is warm, it is a great place to stop after exploring the town.
It was also probably the moment when Szentendre felt the most peaceful: just the river, people sitting around and no reason to hurry anywhere.

Is Szentendre worth visiting?
Szentendre is not the kind of place you visit because you have a long list of famous monuments to see. Its best part is simply the atmosphere.
Colourful streets, little markets, a gelato in the centre and a walk next to the Danube are enough to fill a very pleasant afternoon.
If Budapest sometimes feels too busy, Szentendre is a good place to change rhythm for a few hours. You arrive wanting to visit another town, but you may end up enjoying the fact that, for once, there is almost nothing you have to do.
